Meet Our Artists
As a fine artist and illustrator, I work primarily in mediums that travel easily with me on a daily basis – pens, watercolor, and sometimes even teeny golf pencils or whatever I have on hand – in order to capture what I see around me. Random contour drawings, urban landscapes, and renderings of nearby flowers fill my sketchbooks.
My work's aesthetic shifts frequently between imagined abstractions and close observation. I really enjoy making art on paper and have been commissioned frequently in the past year.
I am illustrating the Things You Can Find Coloring Book series for people of all ages who want an absorbing outlet to play with color and close observation. I hope you enjoy!
Katerina Mertikas has been a professional artist since 1992. Born in Greece, she emigrated to Canada in the 60's.
She classifies her work as colourful above all expressionist and leaning towards a naive style, she depicts whimsical art that shows youth and children enjoying their daily lives.
Her work has been a mainstay of UNICEF since 1993 and many other organizations and companies use her art as greeting cards, posters and prints. There are 2 prints that sell at Koyman Galleries which give back to Ottawa Children's hospital.
One of Katerina's paintings " Honouring my Father", was painted on October 22, 2014 after the attack in Ottawa at the War Memorial where Nathan Cirillo, the corporal standing guard that fateful day, was shot dead.
Out of her heart's urging this painting was created, and it was featured on the front page of The Ottawa Citizen newspaper on November 1st, 2014. The article went on to explain the meaning of the painting, and announced that with Koyman Galleries, and with the Ottawa mayor's support, limited editions are being sold and raising funds for Nathans son Marcus Cirillo's trust fund.
The original painting hangs in the mayors boardroom and an embellished print hangs in Ottawas city hall for all to view.
In 1999 Mertikas was honoured with a “Women of Distinction” award in the arts category, and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts in 2000. 2013 was a very special year for Katerina, as Hallmark Canada selected 3 of her works to be sold across Canada and beyond as part of the Home & Native Land Collection. She was also awarded the United Way 'Community Builder' Award in 2014, and the Ottawa Hellenic award in the arts 2014. She is always happy to share her work for causes which celebrate and protect children in particular.
Katerina is also a mother of two daughters who were the inspiration for many of her paintings.
Mertikas’ work is sold in galleries across Canada, including Koyman Galleries in Ottawa, Ontario. She has been fortunate to have many radio, TV guest appearances and newspaper and magazine articles printed about her unique style that has such a vast following of fans.
I am a Los Angeles Illustrator specializing in finely detailed ink art. So many people have said to me, “Isn't that very meditative doing all that detail?" And the answer is, “yes!" No wonder I'm always so calm. Drawing and coloring can most definitely relax you.
I'm no psychologist or therapist, but I DO know the stress and difficulties of life. You can't just do one thing to combat stress. You have to constantly work at it. It's like a full time job! I say bombard that stress with everything you can muster. Dance every day! Color. Exercise. Laugh. There was a time I was a little down, and I went on YouTube and watched every fail video of people falling down horribly that I could. Laughing is such a fun stress buster!
After being hired to draw pages for coloring books for adults, I decided to create my own version. I love people and I hate that we have to be down, sad or frustrated at times. I've tried to create something unique and fun for you. I wanted you to actually have activities that help with the stress or worry you might have in your life. Things that will get that brain to concentrate about other things rather than the stress du jour.
I'm the kind of person who wants everyone to be happy. That's my stressful place, when I know someone isn't happy. So please use this coloring book in good health, fun and creativity. Always strive for happiness. I don't want to have to show up at your door step worrying about you.
Much love and peace to you!
